Abstract
This paper offers a history of the Social Security program, from its beginnings with the passage of the Social Security Act of 1935 through the 2000s. The authors highlight the program's development and expansion, the debates over reserve funding, changes in cash benefit programs, the birth of Medicare, the Greenspan Commission and the amendments of 1983, the Retirement Earnings Test and the future of the program.
