Independent Contractor vs. Employee: Why independent contractor misclassification matters and what we can do to stop it

Abstract

This NELP policy brief explores the issue of independent contractor misclassification and state and federal strategies for addressing it. The authors detail the various ways that misclassification negatively impacts worker income and benefits; federal, state and local budgets; responsible businesses; and the economy at large. They also examine the types of reforms being proposed on both the federal and state levels.
