Employee Misclassification: Improved Outreach Could Help Ensure Proper Worker Classification
Abstract
This publication reports highlights of testimony given by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on worker classification. The testimony focuses on the number and characteristics of independent contractors; the workforce protections and benefits provided to employees that are not typically available to independent contractors; and the actions that the Department of Labor (DOL) takes to detect and address misclassification. Testimony was given before the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives.
