Abstract
The U.S. Department of Labor, in collaboration with Stanford University's RegLab and Colorado's Department of Labor and Employment, is spearheading the Artificial Intelligence Adjudicator Assistance (AIAA) initiative to explore AI's potential in improving Unemployment Insurance (UI) adjudication. Faced with a surge in UI claims during the COVID-19 pandemic, states encountered significant processing challenges, prompting the need for innovation. Through prototyping an AI model using historical data, the initiative aims to streamline adjudication processes, minimize risks, and share insights with practitioners and policymakers to support informed decision-making in UI administration.
