Abstract
In this article, the authors propose a new method to measure the effects of government AI funding. They argue that traditional metrics like patents and publications are insufficient. Instead, they advocate for tracking the careers of AI researchers from academia to industry using university and employment records. Their pilot study in Ohio suggests AI research extends beyond typical sectors, affecting various industries and boosting wages, indicating substantial economic returns on public AI investments.
